REVIEW: Slipknot “We Are Not Your Kind” Album Review

By JD McGibney

Perhaps one of the most anticipated releases of 2019, Slipknot’s sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, is a brutally emotional auditory adventure. Originally hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, heavy metal juggernaut Slipknot formed in 1995. They made their crushing debut four years later with their self titled debut studio record. From there, they continued on an epic climb to become one of the biggest heavy metal acts on the planet. They released four more full length records, each one established its own distinct sound. Hearing the band evolve sonically became just as iconic as the masks they wear on stage. With each new release, fans gather in anticipation and speculate over what to expect in the next installment of the Slipknot legacy.

From beginning to end this newest album flows flawlessly with dynamic shifts that draw us into the story. Corey Taylor gives a killer vocal performance and gifts us with a genuine emotional soundscape that makes all body hair stand straight up. This album also has a very calculated instrumental flow. It moves as if the entire album were written as one giant song instead of singles. The guitar work stands out with some new heavy pounding grooves, fantastic harmonies, counter melodies, and even call and response moments with the vocals. The bass and percussion, as always, drives in those infamous grooves, hooks and emphasized heavy moments. This record highlights the entire band, and their message of teamwork is stronger than ever before because of this precise composition.

We Are Not Your Kind follows in true Slipknot fashion by setting itself apart from its predecessors. At the same time, it also draws familiar influences from them, which bring a welcome feeling. With tracks like “Orphan,” “Red Flag,” and “Birth of the Cruel,” this new album incites a reminiscence to the classic album Iowa. On the track “Death Because Death,” as well as the more melodic moments in songs like “Unsainted,” “Solway Firth,” and “Not Long For This World,” we are hit with some heavy Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses reminders. A new twist that has weaved its way into this album is a very Swedish-sounding melodic death metal influence. This really pokes its head out on the song “Nero Forte.” One of the pinnacle tracks on the album worth mentioning is the epic “A Liar’s Funeral.” Moving like its own story within the overall flow of the album, this track showcases every emotional, technical, and compositional element that this new record means to showcase.

Filled with strong sonically nostalgic moments, We Are Not Your Kind is an exciting new chapter in the Slipknot legacy. It is meticulously calculated in its composition to draw in a sense of familiarity while introducing brand new elements. This album showcases the growth the band has undergone as a whole in its twenty-four year career. Slipknot is currently on tour in the United States. The heavy carnage of this album is set to be released on August 9th, 2019 through Roadrunner Records!
