Jenna Ortega stars as the iconic Wednesday Addams in Wednesday, director Tim Burton’s coming-of-age reimagining of The Addams Family universe. The series centers on the teen at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts and monsters.
While Wednesday spends much of its time with Ortega’s incredible performance as Wednesday Addams, additional iconic characters from the franchise also appear. Namely, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán guest star as the infamous Morticia and Gomez Addams.
Since the series has proven successful for Netflix, fans have been wondering about what could happen in a second season. Would Wednesday season 2 include more Morticia and Gomez drop-ins at Nevermore? Here’s what the showrunner teased about the future.
Wednesday season 2 to feature more Addams Family
The first season of Wednesday only gave viewers a glimpse into the titular character’s family life, with the first episode revolving around Morticia and Gomez dropping Wednesday off at Nevermore Academy, the school they attended as teenagers.
Zeta-Jones and Guzmán appear as Morticia and Gomez Addams (along with Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday’s little brother Puglsey) in two episodes of the first season, the second being in the fifth episode’s parents weekend festivities. Of course, the Addams family makes a scene.
According to co-showrunner Miles Millar, Wednesday season 2 would open up Wednesday’s world even more and feature even more appearances. While Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the series for a second season (it’s looking very good based on those record-breaking numbers!), we’re hopeful that the mysterious and spooky family will return in an increased capacity.
In an interview with TV Line, Millar said about season 2:
“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles. Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”
Millar elaborated that the series would “definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.” Because the show shares its name with Wednesday Addams, it will continue to largely focus on the teen and her mystery-filled misadventures at Nevermore Academy.
Whether Morticia, Gomez, and Puglsey would actually appear in more than “a couple” episodes in season 2 remains to be seen and depends on actor availability and story necessity. But here’s to hoping there’s plenty more Addams family reunions to come, no matter how many episodes they might be featured in.
The first season effectively closed the case on Morticia and Gomez’s sordid past at Nevermore Academy, though if anyone can dig up more skeletons in their closet, it’s Wednesday. The family could again visit Wednesday at school, or she could return home for a visit of her own. The possibilities are endless. Like Millar said, there’s so much more to explore in the fraught relationship between the woeful teen and her family.
