PHOENIX — A teenager has been detained after firing a gun into a grocery store during an attempted robbery Sunday night in north Phoenix.

Phoenix police say the incident occurred near Interstate 17 and Carefree Highway around 9:15 p.m.

The doors to a grocery store had already closed to new customers, but about a dozen customers were still inside when a juvenile male fired a gunshot into the store, breaking the doors. He reportedly climbed into the store, ordered customers and employees to get down on the ground, and fired more shots into the air.

The suspect attempted to open cash registers and shot at one of the registers before exiting the store and fleeing in a vehicle.

Police say the suspect vehicle was later located in Gilbert and stopped by officials. The suspect, only identified as a 14-year-old boy, was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect is being processed at Maricopa County Juvenile Court Center and charged with multiple felony charges including kidnapping, attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault and endangerment.

The suspect’s identity is not being released due to the fact he is a juvenile.
