Through the Lens: The HU, Apocalyptica & The Rasmus at The Van Buren

Some shows are fun to photograph. Some shows are unforgettable to experience. The HU, Apocalyptica, and The Rasmus at The Van Buren delivered both.

From the moment the lights dropped, it was clear that Phoenix was in for something special. Three internationally acclaimed bands from different corners of the world shared one stage, bringing together rock, metal, classical instrumentation, and cultural tradition in a way that felt both unique and powerful.

The Rasmus opened the evening with a set full of energy and emotion. Their signature blend of dark rock melodies and arena-sized choruses immediately connected with the crowd. Frontman Lauri Ylönen moved effortlessly across the stage, creating countless opportunities for dramatic shots while keeping the audience fully engaged. The band’s performance was polished, passionate, and the perfect way to kick off the night.

As Apocalyptica took the stage, the atmosphere shifted completely. Watching them perform is a reminder that heavy music doesn’t require guitars to hit hard. Their cellos roared through The Van Buren with incredible intensity, creating a wall of sound that was equal parts beautiful and brutal. From a photographer’s standpoint, every member seemed completely immersed in the music, delivering expressive performances that translated perfectly through the lens.

Then came The HU.

The moment the band stepped onto the stage, the energy inside the venue exploded. Their combination of traditional Mongolian instruments, throat singing, and crushing metal rhythms created an experience unlike anything else in modern rock. The lighting, the costumes, the instruments, and the sheer power of the performance made every second visually captivating.

Songs like “Wolf Totem” transformed the crowd into a sea of raised hands, headbanging fans, and pure excitement. Every frame captured felt larger than life. Whether it was a dramatic silhouette against the stage lights or a close-up of a traditional instrument being played with incredible precision, The HU delivered one of the most visually striking performances I’ve photographed.

What stood out most throughout the evening wasn’t just the talent on stage—it was the connection between the bands and the audience. Thousands of miles separate Mongolia and Finland from Arizona, yet for one night inside The Van Buren, music erased every boundary.

As a photographer, I’m always chasing those moments where the energy of a performance can be frozen in a single image. This show provided countless opportunities for exactly that. As a fan, it was simply an incredible night of music.

The HU brought the power.
Apocalyptica brought the artistry.
The Rasmus brought the emotion.

Together, they delivered one of the most memorable concert experiences Phoenix has seen this year.
